Dwight Howard and the Dunk Contest

Hey everyone. Jim here from the SB Nation's Celtics Blog Green Bandwagon. Despite the Magic's two victories over the Celtics this year, which of course include Boston's first loss and that Hedo Turkoglu buzzer beater, I can't hate the Magic. Maybe it's the Dwight Howard effect. That brings me to this diary post. First of all I was blown away by his dunk contest performance. I thought his first three dunks were epic. And I slightly disagree with your take on the Superman dunk. Granted the new nickname might be a bit much. But it was amazing where he took off from and that he could get high enough to throw the ball through the hoop. There was a strong chance he could have blown that. Huge bonus points for pulling it off. Although I wonder if there will be any backlash about the amount of time and energy Howard put into the contest. It was just seven days ago that Van Gundy criticized Howard and questioned his priorities. Now I'm of the opinion that this is a non story. But sometimes perception is reality. I'm not trying to stir anything up. Just wanted to throw that out there. Keep up the good work.

I agree with your disagreement

I loved the Superman dunk. I would have loved it even without the costume, but the costume just made it that much more obvious how much of his heart he was pouring into this thing. I'm a sucker for people laying it all out there like that, be it in the playoffs or in a dunk contest, or anywhere else in life for that matter. It's just great to see, and so refreshing with all the other guys who had to be grudgingly talked into participating in these events (not a knock on those guys, BTW; I just wish the league would figure out a way to only have players who want to participate do so). Anyway, I was a Dwight Howard fan even before this, and now I'm even more of a Dwight Howard fan. If Stan Van Gundy doesn't want him, we'll happily take him on the Suns. :)

Shaq and Dwight up front with Amare at the three? Good Lord.

Amare at the three

Well, it sound absurd, but Amare did mention in an article once that he'd love to play the three (no doubt ticking off then-teammate Shawn Marion in the process). I just about laughed out loud when I read it, but at the same time I'm not too surprised he said that. Really what I had in mind, though, was Amare at the four and Dwight at the five. (I'm still not drinking the Shaq koolaid just yet).

Re: Amare at the three

If it's a regular-season game, Shaq's on the sidelines in a suit.
