Off-Day Open Thread: Let's Talk Fantasy Basketball

Jameer Nelson of the Orlando Magic dribbles the basketball in an NBA game.

As the NBA season winds down, so too does the fantasy basketball season. NBARoto.com recently had me on its show to discuss the fantasy values of Orlando Magic's non-marquee players down the stretch; Carlos Arroyo, Keith Bogans, Jameer Nelson, and Maurice Evans are a few of the players we named in our five-minute conversation.

With that in mind, I thought I'd make today's discussion about fantasy basketball in general. Here are a few questions to get us started:

  • How are your teams doing?
  • What was your biggest draft-day steal?
  • What big trades did you make?
  • What was your best and worst waiver-wire pickup?
  • Which player did you forget to activate, only to see him have a breakout game?

Make yourself heard in the comments. I'm off to deliberate whether or not to take a flier on Maurice Evans. After all, he's averaging 10.4 points per game on 53% shooting as a starter.

Thanks once again to NBA Roto for inviting me on-board for that interview. For more great fantasy basketball resources, check out Give Me the Rock and B-Ball, B-Fast at FanHouse.

Nice

Man that interview was great. I loved every minute of it. Good info.

How are your teams doing?
I only have one fantasy basketball team this year - MagicMadness league as you know, BQR. I'm 3rd in the league and I recently wrapped up a spot in the playoffs. I was trying to make a push heading into the playoffs, yet I had a terrible loss to the worst team in our league, last week. :(

What was your biggest draft-day steal?
That has got to be Rudy Gay in the 10th round. His ranking is 26th overall this fantasy season.

What big trades did you make?
Eh- Well I traded Luol Deng for Rip Hamilton. Thought I could shore up the things my team was already good at... not too good of a move there.

But I finally had gotten rid of Al Harrington and I got Tayshaun Prince in return, who was a plesant surprise. I just COULD NOT stand Harrington's streakiness any longer.

What was your best and worst waiver-wire pickup?
Worst-Chris Webber... Bad idea

Best- Andrew Bynum... He was one of the best players on my team and in the league. I dont know how he got dropped before. But now hes hurt and I dropped him so hopefully I dont look to bad for that.

Which player did you forget to activate, only to see him have a breakout game?
Well, one time I decided not to activate Tayshaun Prince, and instead activate I think it was Travis Outlaw (who was playing great at the time, mind you). Then Prince decides to go off for like 28 points, 6 assists and some rebounds. I was pissed.

Re: Nice

I'm still in the playoff picture in the MM league, even though I'm really far below .500. I'll just consider myself happy to be there if I indeed make the postseason, because I'll get my hat handed to me no matter what.

Rudy Gay in a 10th ground was a steal. I had nothing but blunders on draft-day. :-/

How seriously should the Magic pursue Clippers free-agent guard Corey Maggette?
  • As seriously as possible, even if it means trading Hedo Turkoglu and filler to Los Angeles in a sign-and-trade deal
  • Fairly seriously, as in offering the full mid-level exception, and thus losing the cap space to sign any other free-agents
  • Not seriously, as in offering only the low-level veteran's exception
  • Not at all.
