Chicago Bulls Win the NBA Draft Lottery

Haha, wow. Talk about unlikely.

The Chicago Bulls won the top pick in the 2008 NBA Draft despite having only a 1.7% chance of doing so. The Miami Heat will pick second, and the Minnesota Timberwolves will pick third. Here's the complete draft order:

  1. Chicago Bulls
  2. Miami Heat
  3. Minnesota Timberwolves
  4. Seattle SuperSonics
  5. Memphis Grizzlies
  6. New York Knicks
  7. Los Angeles Clippers
  8. Milwaukee Bucks
  9. Charlotte Bobcats
  10. New Jersey Nets
  11. Indiana Pacers
  12. Sacramento Kings
  13. Portland Trail Blazers
  14. Golden State Warriors

Certainly the Bulls' and Heat's gain is the Magic's loss, as those two teams figure to improve tremendously with their picks. They won't be better than the Magic -- barring a trade, anyway -- but they've closed the gap.

Worth noting: the Milwaukee Bucks will pick eighth, which is not exactly where they want to be. Their new GM, John Hammond, indicated earlier today (via NBN) that he might consider trading the pick for veteran help. It'd take quite the deal for the Magic to pry the eighth pick from Milwaukee, but stranger things have happened.

Trading Up

I don’t see the benefit of trading up. Again, outside of Beasley, Mayo, and Rose, the rest of the class is completely boring and there are no impact guys. Anthony Randolph? He’s a project … there’s no great benefit in trading up to the #8 spot. We’re better served trying to improve elsewhere.

Screw the Draft

We need to trade for Tyrus Thomas! Man would that be sweet. They most likely take Beasly as that is what they have needed lately, and Thomas should be expendable. I wonder what it would take?

If we don’t say screw the draft, then….

If we do trade Hedo I bet the Knicks would be all over that with their 6th pick. From there hopefully Mayo would be available, if not then it’s Randolph or Love. With a mature core of Nelson/Lewis/Howard to carry the team and the incoming MLE 2 guard I do not think that having a rookie stud would throw things off. Especially since they’d most likely play behind Battie for the first year, unless we get Mayo that is. If it is Mayo, he would start at the 2, and thrive. I get the feeling he is as special as Rose or Beasley. What we use the MLE on in that case is beyond me, maybe break it up and solidly meet bench needs.

Hedo

... if Mayo is available at #6 (which he won’t), I’d be willing to trade Hedo in that instance. But in that instance only. People need to understand how valuable Hedo is, considering his production output/contract is outstanding. The only way I would trade Hedo is if we get a can’t miss guy like Mayo (which we won’t). I know that D’Antoni loves Hedo and could be open to that type of trade if we come calling …

Bulls will pick Beasley but that doesn’t make Thomas available. Depending on who the Bulls hire, they’ll slot Beasley to the 4 and Thomas to the 5. You need to understand (and I know this because I live in Chicago) ... trading Thomas would be a huge PR disaster for the Bulls. Trading Aldridge for Thomas was bad enough but then trading away Thomas would be just as worse. Thomas isn’t going nowhere. Paxson and the Bulls want to validate that trade. I think pairing Beasley with Thomas will help Tyrus a lot.

Correction

I meant to say the Bulls might pick Beasley. They’ll more likely to draft Rose, which would definitely make Thomas unavailable in that scenario.

Mayo/Hibbert

If you do trade Hedo to snatch Mayo we can use #22 to grab Hibbert. He’s a little lazy sometimes but we could use his size and rebounding.

... Hibbert is awful. His game will translate horribly in the NBA.

If the magic traded for Tyrus Thomas I would literally vomit. Thomas is garbage.

He’s a better power forward than anyone else the Magic have, and he’s not even 22 yet. I’d take a chance on him.

Again, Paxson won’t trade Thomas anyway so the idea is a moot point.

I like Thomas (personally) but if we’re going to trade for a PF, I’d be more apt to trade for someone like Haslem (who would be a perfect enforcer-type player) or someone else.

I just don’t see why they would want to keep Marion if they drafted Beasley. It makes far more sense to take Beasley, keep Haslem and try to use the huge number coming off the books via Marion to go after Brand or Boozer. He won’t opt out and I genuinely believe that Marion is too moody and a hinderance to succeed with a team that will be starting with a first time coach and mostly garbage after the starters. Free Ricky Buckets, too.

I don’t think the Magic need to move up in the draft at all. Chad Ford has us getting Brandon Rush at 22nd in the draft. Not that he is ussually right this early but he would be a great fit for the Magic. CDR would also be a good pick at 22. Don’t see the point in moving up anymore really.

Agreed. Right with you man … I’ve been preaching CDR for a while. Rush would work too …

Hedo...

I don’t know that trading him is the answer, considering the amount of shot creation that he enables. Besides Keyon and occasionally Jameer, we have no one else on the team capable of creating their own shot on a regular basis. So if we get rid of Handsome Hedo, it’s going to incapacitate us even further and those type of players are hard to come by in free agency.

As well, Chicago is going to be moving someone(s) in the Deng/Gordon/Thomas/Hinrich grouping and I think that Noah is as equally unmovable as Thomas. The Heat fan in me says that they’re going to take Rose and are definitely going to have to trade Hinrich, but hold onto Duhon and are stuck with Hughes. Also leaves Gordon pretty much out in the cold.

How seriously should the Magic pursue Clippers free-agent guard Corey Maggette?
  • As seriously as possible, even if it means trading Hedo Turkoglu and filler to Los Angeles in a sign-and-trade deal
  • Fairly seriously, as in offering the full mid-level exception, and thus losing the cap space to sign any other free-agents
  • Not seriously, as in offering only the low-level veteran's exception
  • Not at all.
