Orlando Magic News for May 27th: Dave Twardzik Talks Draft Strategy
First one of these posts in a while...
- There's a Tim Povtak-penned article in the print version of this morning's Orlando Sentinel regarding this week's pre-draft camp and, to a lesser extent, the Magic's draft strategy. He spoke to Magic assistant GM Dave Twardzik for some insight. Here are a few pertinent quotes:
"In all likelihood, we'll probably stay where we are [at 22]. And there is a chance our guy could be here [at the camp]," Twardzik said. "But there is a better chance that he won't be."
[....]
The Magic are expected to conduct personal interviews and private workouts at the RDV Sportsplex with a handful of players immediately after the draft camp. Twardkzik said the Magic likely will take the best player available at 22, regardless of position.
Question: if the best player available is a point guard, will the Magic still draft him, despite their glaring need for a true power forward? Honestly, I don't think I care. The Magic haven't drafted well and it's unlikely anyone of consequence will still be on the board when the Magic pick. I've yet to form an opinion regarding whom the Magic should pick because, well, I don't watch college basketball. Based on the scouting reports, I favor Brandon Rush and his "high baskeball I.Q."
- I updated the Mock Draft Watch page today. Incredibly, ESPN's Chad Ford has us selecting Bill Walker, a small forward from Kansas State. Um, what? With Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu -- the third and second options on offense, respectively -- already manning that position, the Magic would be mad to draft another one, unless he can also play shooting guard.
- Tom Ziller breaks down the "pure point" vs. "combo guard" debate (using stats and graphs!) and asserts that no one kind is "better" than the other. Three of the four point guards still playing (Chauncey Billups, Tony Parker, and Rajon Rondo) are combo guards and the other (Derek Fisher) is a small two-guard. Conclusion? Assists are overrated.
- And here's an interesting note for Jameer Nelson detractors: using this scale, he's a "purer" point guard than Kirk Hinrich, T.J. Ford, Billups, and even Devin Harris, among others. Of course, as Ziller notes, "purity" has nothing to do with "quality," but it dispels the notion that Nelson is a shameless, selfish gunner of a PG whom the Magic need to dump immediately. Nelson's not on the graph, but here are the raw data Ziller used.
- Bethlehem Shoals and co. announced today that their book, FreeDarko presents The Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac: Style, Stats, and Stars in Today's Game, is available for pre-order on Amazon.com. If you're a basketball geek (and you'd have to be to read my site, frankly) you owe it to yourself to order this book now.

Bill Walker would be a good pick if they are going for the best player available regardless of needs. If Chad Ford is right and he’s finally back in shape, Walker can be one of the best players in this draft. He’s a mental case but that’s not much of a problem if he lives in Orlando. I’d be happy with this pick but I’d still rather Rush or Douglas-Roberts.

Ford said Walker would be a Top-5 pick were it not for that injury. Sure would be nice to get lottery-level talent at 22.

youtube will have videos of him playing with Mayo in high school. He was quite the baller before he got hurt. The way I see it, if Ford is right and he is in top shape then he’ll shoot up ahead of guys like Green and alexander in the draft. Honestly, if he falls to 22 then he’s probably still out of shape and not worth the pick. I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

Nelson/Walker
Cool article about point guards. Having a combo guard isn’t bad if he is any good I guess. It is cool to see that Nelson checks out somewhere between being a combo/pass first guard. I think in this offense and with his great shot and ability to finish that is a perfect blend.
As for us taking Walker, I would not be terribly disappointed. He is very strong and very explosive and should be a beast on the defensive end. We do not have that type of player even though we have plenty of small forwards. Also, if he can get his dribble down and a more consistent shot he could play the 2. The problem is I don’t see him being effective at that position right away, if at all. CDR would be the better pick imo.

About that
It’s not that Walker can’t dribble or shoot, but I think that at this point he is a bigger Mo Evans. With tons of upside to boot, probably more than CDR for that matter.

"A bigger Mo Evans"
Which is to say he’s a true three, right?

Walker
... we don’t have the luxury to draft the best player available. We still have needs we have to address before we can become an elite team and draft whoever we want just to strengthen a bench (see Lakers, Pistons, etc.)
I know my college b-ball and I’ll continue to bury my point into the ground if I have to. We need to draft either CDR or Rush … anything else will be unacceptable in my eyes unless something dramatic happens. The fact that CDR is around our range at #22, I say he’s first pickings … I’m not sold that Rush will be available at #22.

I agree, but Walker is not a bad pick. Again, if he proves he’s worth it then he won’t be available at 22. Chad Ford’s board is not gospel, we could still get Rush. I’d prefer Rush to CDR.

He’s definitely not a bad pick, but we have some needs elsewhere. As for Rush, it’s looking more and more like Phoenix is salivating at the thought of picking him to eventually usurp Grant Hill … food for thought.
