UPDATED: Where Might the Magic's Free Agents Go? Miami a Strong Possibility
I updated this post to reflect the fact that the Magic lost Grant Hill in free agency last summer, which I somehow overlooked earlier. Thanks to commenter OVERWADED for bringing that serious oversight to my attention. Additionally, I updated the list after the jump to reflect the Phoenix Suns' potential interest in one of Orlando's current free agents.
With all the draft nonsense last week, it was easy for us at 3QC to lose sight of the fact that the NBA's free-agency period starts Tuesday.
So I'd like to thank Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald (via Dee Gugel of the Orlando Sentinel) for shocking us out of our stupor with today's Florida Sports Buzz feature. Apparently, the Heat have their eyes on some of our free agents (emphases Jackson's):
Riley said he still might trade for a point guard, with Memphis (Kyle Lowry, among others) considered in play. Otherwise, the Heat believes it can find a stopgap starter from a free agent group including Chris Duhon, Carlos Arroyo, Keyon Dooling, Anthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue, Jannero Pargo and Anthony Carter. And the Heat likes restricted free agent Sebastian Telfair, though Minnesota can match any offer.[....]
[Heat GM Pat] Riley pointed to the potential to lure a player from ''teams that have three or four unrestricted free agents.'' Keep an eye on Orlando (Arroyo, Dooling, Maurice Evans) and Golden State [...]
Last year, the Magic only lost two three players to free agency: little-used point guard Travis Diener to Indiana; more notably, backup power forward Darko Milicic to Memphis; and swingman Grant Hill to Phoenix. Nobody expected Diener or Hill to come back, and although Milicic's departure surprised plenty of people, we should have expected the Magic to ignore him if it meant focusing on signing Rashard Lewis, which they did.
But the circumstances surrounding its summer -- limited cap space, high expectations entering next season, the higher quality of its own free agents -- will magnify the impact of any Orlando's free-agent losses, especially if they eventually sign with archrival Miami.
What follows after the jump is a list of Orlando's free agents, what they can provide, and which teams might be interested in them.

Thanks for sticking with us. As promised, here's the list of Orlando's four best free agents, their best qualities, and which teams might have an interest in them.
- Carlos Arroyo
- Provides a pass-first mentality and depth at the point guard position.
- Might interest Denver, Miami, New York, and Phoenix.
- Keyon Dooling
- Provides tenacious perimeter defense and the ability to create his own shot. He can play either guard position competently.
- Might interest Denver, Miami, New Jersey, Toronto, and Utah.
- Maurice Evans
- Provides above-average perimeter defense and three-point shooting.
- Might interest Miami, Philadelphia, and Toronto.
- Adonal Foyle
- Provides above-average post defense and six fouls.
- Might interest Dallas, Minnesota, New Orleans, and San Antonio.
I can't imagine any NBA team lining up to sign Orlando's other free agents, Pat Garrity or James Augustine, although the Magic tendered Augustine a qualifying offer and thus have the right to match any offer another team makes for his services.
Given how important the first four guys in that list were to Orlando's success last season, one could argue that this summer's free-agency period will prove more important to Orlando's title hopes than last summer's did. In Lewis, they got their big prize. Now, it's a matter of keeping the role-players around. Otherwise, the Magic could find themselves taking a step back next season.

The Off-Season and Free Agency
Just a thought, if you’re going to compare this off-seasons free agency situation to last summers, you might want to add Grant Hill to that list.
Even if we lost all of our free agents this summer (which we won’t), I still don’t think that would be equivalent to losing Grant and Darko.
In my opinion, Dooling is the most important player to resign. Unfortunately, he’ll be the most difficult to keep. If Dooling goes, we pretty much have to resign Arroyo, unless they have another backup PG in mind. I know Lee played point guard for one season in college, but that isn’t something he won’t be ready for.
I like Mo Evans, but he is totally expendable. Despite subtle differences, Bogans is close to a carbon copy. With that said, I think he has the best chance of resigning. I’m not sure how I feel about that right now. I guess it just depends on who the other options are. I personally hope the Magic take a look at Mickael Pietrus. And I’d probably rather see Redick get a shot, than Evans out there again. Nothing against Evans, we just need more from that position.
In the end, I think the shooting guard position will come down to three players. Two of them are already known with Bogans and Lee. The only question left is who will be the other, Redick, Evans, or a free agent? If I had to guess, I’d say Evans.
As for the point guard spot, Nelson is the starter, no question about it. The question is who will be his backup, Arroyo, Dooling, somebody else? And I say that knowing Dooling is known as a combo guard, but by the end of last season, I think Stan had made it clear where Dooling was going to get the majority of his playing time. I want Dooling back, but I think he’ll want more than Otis will give him.
Moving up, I know everyone talks about getting a "true power forward", but I don’t see our starting forwards changing. Even if rebounding was an issue at times, they caused far more problems on the other end night in and out. Turk and Lewis were very consistent, and brought something good to every game. The same can’t be said for our backcourt which was as inconsistent as they come.
So as for bigs, I think we need some size and force that we can bring off of the bench when needed. Battie will help a whole lot, pending he comes back healthy. What we saw from Gortat at the end of last season was a pleasant surprise. Cook also showed he could help us here. We have to remember we didn’t have Battie or Cook against the Pistons. Not to say that they would be the difference, but they both would have helped us in that series.
I’ll wrap this up by saying; don’t expect Otis to do anything drastic. He’s shown us time and time again that he likes playing it safe. While I would like to see him "make a splash", I’m just not expecting it.
P.S.-You have a sweet blog. I used to comment on it before you changed over to SBN. Since then I’ve just been a reader. Finally today, I broke down and signed up.

I just updated the post to reflect that. Thanks.

Most Magic fans will agree that keeping Dooling should be Orlando’s highest priority. If he goes, though, I don’t expect Arroyo to come back. He’d have to take a pay cut, and there won’t be any shortage of teams willing to offer more than we are. At that point, we’d have to consider signing a guy like Chris Duhon, Tyronn Lue, Anthony Carter… hold on, I just threw up a bit in my mouth….
Moving up, I know everyone talks about getting a “true power forward”, but I don’t see our starting forwards changing.
Fair enough, but if the Magic had the chance to land a rebounding beast like Jeff Foster or David Lee, they’d have to pull the trigger… and they’d probably have to start them, too. But you make a good point.

Battie, Gortat, and Cook can be valuable in small doses, probably no more than 12 minutes a game (probably more for Cook, considering his three-point shooting.

I don’t. And I don’t think Magic fans do, either. Not after his inactivity at the trading deadline and, much more recently, at the draft.
Finally today, I broke down and signed up.
Welcome back.

I just lol'ed
It’s not that those four guys you mentioned didn’t contribute last year that has me laughing, but more the fact that they could possibly be integral to our success this coming year. I’d argue that they are almost all expendable and easily replaceable. The one glaring need that I see right now is getting a backup point guard, and re-signing Dooling to fill that roll would be sweet, but if we can’t it won’t be a game breaker. Duhon, Williams, or even Arroyo would be just fine. As for Evans, he and Bogans are just taking away playing time from J.J. and if they both stuck around again this next year then they’d do the same to Lee. No thanks. Foyle also won’t see any playing time due to the emmergence of Gortat. So to sum it up, Dooling or Arroyo can be re-signed, but the other guys? Bye bye.

A nice rebuttal. You and I will have to agree to disagree, except regarding Dooling. Guys with his skills are hard to come by, so I don’t think we can replace him easily. Duhon might be as good a defender, but we sure as Hell know we won’t get diddly from him offensively.

I am just thinking out loud here. Dooling was our best bench player, by far. He is a typical combo guard that has been known for his defense; until last year that is, as he really showed more consistency with his jumper which increased his value by a lot I’d imagine. He is not a starter because of his lack of a typical 1 or 2 skill set, but off the bench he is very valuable. So yeah, you are right, he is not easily replaceable at all. We do need a back up 1, and Dooling did that well, when he wasn’t the primary ball handler that is. Arroyo was really more the back up distributor for the Magic, as we saw when Nelson sat out a few games towards the end of the season. Now this weakness of Doolings was not a big deal because Hedo runs the offense so well, but that also means that Hedo and Jameer are the only two ball handlers we have, and we do need another one. So what do we need more? A combo guard that can defend and score in bunches or a back up ball handler? It is still obvious that we need both, but if Dooling were to leave and we sign another ball handler, this could mean a lot of burn for our rookie Lee, and J.J. as well. So no, I won’t be heartbroken by it. I see Dooling as more of a luxury than a necessity. His departure could allow Nelson to play more minutes, and allow Redick to play when the Magic go big with Hedo at the point and Lewis at the 3. That is something I would like to see.

Count Dallas in being interested
in all of those guys… especially Dooling…. but more than likely we wont be able to get much done with you guys, unless it is a sign and trade type deal.

Maggette
I’m sure this will be talked about eventually here but Maggette has reportedly expressed heavy interest in playing for the Magic next season. If the Magic could get him he would have to take at least a 1.2 million dollar pay cut a season. To get him Orlando would lose their entire MLE, which IMO would ruin any chance of resigning Dooling. It probably not going to happen but it’s worth mentioning going into tomorrow.
